Free Public Webinar: 22 Native Plants for 2022 : How to Prep This Fall for Next Spring [Video]

As many know, Fall is a great time to plant native perennials in your yard. They go dormant over winter and come back strong in Spring and beyond.

If you are new to native plants and need help getting started, the wide variety of plants available and information can be overwhelming.

Experienced horticulturist Kim Simmen and avid native plant gardener Rebecca Vargas, both Rewild board members present an introductory session on garden preparation and native plant selection. No prior experience is required as Kimberly and Rebecca walk through the process, the plants, the planting and maintenance. The event will be live on Tuesday, August 24 at 7 PM and the recording will be posted on this page after the event. The recording of the event is on the right.

Kimberly Simmen is an experienced horticulturist with 20 plus years in the business. In July 2020 during the pandemic, Kimberly opened KMS Native Plants LLC in Lake Grove procuring plants native to Long Island, the Northeast and North America for her customers.  She currently consults Girl Scout troops, schools, homeowners, landscapers and anyone else willing to learn about native plants and the importance of biodiversity. Kimberly joined the board of ReWild Long Island in 2021.

Rebecca Vargas is a mom, a blogger, and an ecological garden designer. She earned her B.A in Communication and Culture from the NY School of Professional Studies and since having her daughter 5 years ago, she has been deeply interested in environmental issues and ecological landscaping. She spends much of her time gardening for wildlife in the suburbs and encouraging others to do the same. She launched her blog (realisticgardening.com) to inspire and educate others about the importance of native plants and peaceful gardening, particularly in small or difficult areas. Rebecca recently completed a landscape design course with the intention of applying that knowledge to public and private native plant projects across Long Island. She recently designed and facilitated a native plant project at a local park in Valley Stream with the assistance of Rewild Long Island and she is looking forward to collaborating on many more ecological projects in the near future. Rebecca also joined the ReWild Board in 2021.
