Compost Bin & Rain Barrel Sales Across Long Island
Long Island communities are joining together to make backyard composting easy and affordable. Five towns are hosting limited-time composter and rain barrel sales:
Each sale offers discounted compost bins and rain barrels, with easy online ordering. But hurry — every town has an “Order By” deadline. Once it closes, the opportunity is gone until next year.
Why Compost?
Save money: Finished compost improves your soil, reducing the need for store-bought fertilizers. Using a rain barrel cuts your water bill.
Reduce waste: Up to 30% of what we throw away is food scraps and yard waste. Composting keeps it out of landfills and incinerators.
Protect our bays and groundwater: Healthy soils and reduced runoff mean cleaner water for our community.
Join your neighbors: Hundreds of Long Islanders are already composting at home. Together, we’re keeping tons of food scraps out of the waste stream every year.
Common Concerns (and the Truth)
“Won’t it smell?”
No. A well-managed compost bin smells like fresh earth. Adding “browns” (leaves, shredded paper) balances food scraps and keeps odors away.“What about pests?”
Compost bins are designed to keep pests out. If you avoid adding meat, dairy, and oily foods, there’s nothing to attract animals.“I don’t have time.”
Composting takes just a few minutes a week — less than taking out extra trash bags.“I can’t compost in winter.”
Yes, you can! Keep adding scraps; the pile will start breaking down again when it warms up.
Rain Barrels: A Perfect Match
Every sale also includes rain barrels, which collect free water from your roof. Why it matters:
Saves money on summer water bills
Reduces polluted runoff into our bays and harbors
Provides chlorine-free water plants love
A compost bin + rain barrel combo is the easiest, most affordable way to care for your garden and our environment.
