Mattituck High School’s Botany Club
The Mattituck High School Botany Club is a dedicated group of students in grades 7 through 12 who share a passion for plants, ecology, and the natural world. With curiosity and commitment at its heart, the club brings together young people who are eager to make a positive difference in their school and community. In 2025, the Botany Club was honored to be awarded a Native Plant Garden through the ReWild Community Gardens Program, a recognition that reflects the students’ enthusiasm and sense of purpose.
The mission of the Botany Club extends well beyond gardening. Members seek to beautify the school campus while also supporting the health of local ecosystems through the promotion of native plants. By choosing species that naturally thrive in our region, students are helping to create habitats for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife, while also restoring ecological balance. Just as importantly, the club works to spark an appreciation among their peers for the natural beauty that surrounds them each day.
Through hands-on projects and collaborative efforts, Botany Club members are instilling a sense of stewardship in the next generation. They are learning that even small actions- planting a flower, nurturing a seedling, or tending a garden- can ripple outward to create lasting change. The Native Plant Garden will stand not only as a vibrant, living classroom but also as a legacy of what can be accomplished when young people come together to care for the earth.
