Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit environmental education organization located in Queens, NY. Our mission includes educating children and adults in the New York metropolitan area, protecting and preserving Alley Pond Park, other local open spaces, and bodies of water, and advocating for sustainable environmental policies and practices.
APEC was first organized in 1972 in a small storage building located in Alley Pond Park by a group of citizens and environmental educators dedicated to restoring the park as a site where people could experience nature firsthand within an urban environment. Since then, APEC has grown into a strong, community-based organization that hosts environmental education programs in the most eco-diverse park in New York City. With Queens being the Gateway to NYC, we strive to provide a diverse array of opportunities to connect with natural areas, offering programming celebrating our region’s diverse wildlife, and how we can better share the planet with the many organisms that call it home.
Our newest endeavor to enhance our space, following the opening of our brand-new, Gold LEED certified center, is the creation of Founders’ Grove to honor the community members that helped APEC get its start. As part of this project, our native ReWild garden provides a direct link between our visitors and participants to the over 300 species of birds and other wildlife that reside in Alley Pond Park. We believe natural spaces such as these should benefit all organisms and the opportunity to expand and enrich the space at our center supports our ongoing mission.
We thank the founding members of APEC and all those involved in the creation and care of Founders’ Grove including ReWild Long Island, Scout Troop 253, and the many APEC staff and volunteers who help maintain this special space. We welcome all to this space to explore, reflect, and rest. Learn more about our center and the programs we offer at www.alleypond.org.
