The end of Erland Road is a special place many neighbors enjoy. It’s the end of a walk or run, the starting point for a float around the creek, the site of the annual block party, and the spot to park and take in views of the West Meadow peninsula and the Long Island Sound beyond.
Years ago, there was a hill of asphalt leading to the water and an abandoned house. Today, the land is on its way to being restored. A new native garden is being planted so that everyone can enjoy its natural beauty while also supporting the ecosystem of Long Island.
The native garden will be planted to the left of the fire hydrant and will contain Carex rosea (rosy sedge), Eurybia divaricata (white woodland aster), Allium cernuum (nodding onion), Osmunda cinnamomea (cinnamon fern), and Pycanthemum virginianum (mountain mint).
