Designed by UUFH Volunteers through the 2025 Winter Garden Design Workshop.
In 2025, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington (UUFH) launched its Welcome Garden, a native plant installation made possible by a Community Gardens Grant from ReWild Long Island. This 2,500-square-foot garden replaces a section of lawn with ecologically rich, pollinator-friendly plantings, aligning with the Fellowship’s values of honoring the interdependent web of life and fostering sustainability.
Strategically located at the entrance of the UUFH campus, the garden is designed to be both beautiful and educational, offering a four-season experience for congregants, visitors, and the surrounding community. It serves as a living classroom—supporting biodiversity, providing habitat for birds and beneficial insects, and demonstrating how native landscaping can be both functional and inspiring in suburban environments.
Led by UUFH’s Landscaping and Grounds Committee and supported by over 20 volunteers, including Master Gardeners, environmental justice advocates, and enthusiastic newcomers, the garden is part of a broader multi-year ecological sustainability initiative. The project is maintained through weekly care and integrates with existing irrigation systems, ensuring long-term vitality.
Through ongoing stewardship, public education events, and inclusive participation, UUFH’s Welcome Garden embodies its mission to create a more sustainable and interconnected future—one native plant at a time.
