Birthplace with Lilacs by George Mallis
Located in Huntington Station, Long Island, NY, the Walt Whitman Birthplace was built in 1816 by the poet’s father, Walter Whitman, Sr. and Walt Whitman, Jr. was born here on May 31, 1819. The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association preserves the history of America’s greatest poet and promotes Whitman’s work and legacy and, with a grant from ReWild now features a Native Garden in front of the historic home.
An internationally renowned poet, Walt Whitman turned the world’s eye on 19th-century America by chronicling the issues of the age such as westward expansion, slavery, and the Civil War through verse. At the Birthplace’s Interpretive Center visitors can delve deeply into the world and work of Walt Whitman while celebrating inclusivity and inspiring creativity. A series of exhibits including many portraits of the poet allow you to follow through his boyhood to his international prominence as one of our country’s greatest visionaries.
Known for unique community engagements, diverse audiences are drawn to the creative energy and educational experiences we foster. The beautiful Native Garden, provided by ReWild, elevates our school field trips and scouting events and provides a haven for pollinators while honoring Whitman’s reverence for the natural world. ReWild’s support and commitment to biodiversity is one we celebrate and share.
