about TVHS
The Three Village Historical Society was founded in 1964 by community members who believe in the power of local history to understand our cultural heritage and shape our future. In addition to the Three Village History Museum exhibits in the Bayles-Swezey House (c. 1805), and the Dominick - Crawford Barn (c. 1840) History & Education Center, TVHS continues its goal to educate the community about local history through events, walking tours, educational programs, and the Three Village Farmers & Artisans Market. The Museum continues collecting and preserving artifacts, documents, and other materials of local significance and continuously researches the deep history of the people who have lived in the Three Village area from earliest habitation to the present.
Cultivating Natural Beauty
The Three Village Historical Society + Museum community garden is the home garden of the ReWild Mid Suffolk chapter. Over the years, Scout projects have contributed native plantings. In 2023, Living Lands installed new gardens near the house with support from a PSEG grant. Historic flooding in January and August 2024 damaged much of the landscaping and regrading to redirect water further disturbed the gardens. ReWild Long Island / Mid Suffolk is now replanting, supported by grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Long Island Native Plant Initiative and KMS Native Plants.
What You’ll Find
Native Pollinator Gardens: Mixed shrubs and perennials planted for native bees, butterflies, moths and other pollinators. A designated Monarch Waystation, the milkweed supports monarch butterflies.
Sensory Garden: Perennials chosen for smell, touch and taste.
Medicinal and Kitchen Gardens: Shrubs and perennials are examples of what might have been used in indigenous and colonial gardens for medicine, herbs and tea.
Wetlands: Mixed shrubs, grasses and perennials planted to stabilize the regraded drainage ditch and new vernal pool. The focus here is to use native plants to exclude the invasive weeds and provide food & habitat for wildlife.
Deck Garden: Mixed shrubs, grasses and perennials provide a buffer around the deck. Pussy willows at the back start the show in spring.
Hedgerow: Mixed shrubs and perennials planted to stabilize the slope created by regrading. These plants have flowers for humans & pollinators, berries & shelter for birds and others.
